Angular Cheilitis, known also by the term cheilosis, is a condition that causes inflammation, itching, blistering, and cracking at the corners of the mouth and around the lips. If the irritation continues, scabbing and crusting may form. Angular cheilitis is not passed from person to person.

Angular cheilitis is often attributed to dry skin and many people who have the condition find that their condition worsens in cold weather. Licking the skin around the mouth and lips should be avoided as this will worsen the irritation and provide a medium for bacterial growth.
Your personal hygiene is very important.
Strict attention to dental hygiene is a must for angular cheilitis treatment as many angular chelitis sufferers develop oral yeast infections and secondary bacterial infections in the cracks of the skin around the mouth. Brushing and flossing should be performed on a daily basis. For those who wear dentures, soaking overnight in a solution of ten parts water and one part bleach will destroy bacterial growth.
Along with home care and hygiene it is important not to self diagnose. Seek the care of a competent medical professional, either your dentist or medical doctor for any persistent oral irritation to rule out more serious disorders. Early angular cheilitis treatment can prevent complications and unsightly scarring.
